The Pamunugama Police have launched an investigation to arrest three suspects who broke into a business establishment in Uswetakeiyawa where waste iron is purchased on February 25, assaulted and stole a gold chain from the owner. The stolen gold chain is worth about Rs.400,000.
The injured businessman lodged a complaint with the Pamunugama Police on Tuesday (28) after being discharged from hospital. The Police also said that he has identified two of the three people involved in the attack who are also residents of Uswetakeiyawa. The Police said that the two suspects are now absconding. Investigations have revealed that one of the suspects was previously arrested by the Wattala and Kandana Police stations on assault charges.
According to Police, no reason has been revealed for the attack on the businessman. Meanwhile, Jaffna Police had received a complaint on Tuesday (28) about the theft of over Rs. 1 million gold worth which had been kept in a cupboard in the Pooja room of a house in Kokuvil, Jaffna.
The complaint had been made by P.W.Thavinidhi (82) a resident of Champion Lane, Kokuvil. She had said that the gold items were stolen by the 23-year-old maid who was working in her house.
The maid, on questioning by the Police, admitted to the theft between February 20 and 21.
She also claimed that she had pawned the stolen gold items with a financial institution located in Jaffna.
The Police said that steps will be taken to obtain the gold items in to Police custody through a Court order.
