Aswesuma benefits to over 1 million more from July

The Government has decided to launch the process of calling applications  for the second round of the Aswesuma Welfare Benefit Programme in the first quarter of 2024 finalizing it during June 2024.

The payments to be made from July  and revising the number of eligible families upto 2.4 million from the already registered 1.4 million.

The government has taken measures to revise the Aswesuma Welfare Benefit Programme with the view of expanding the benefits for the beneficiary families.

The country’s new consolidated welfare programme Aswesuma was implemented in 2013 with the goal of creating a poverty-free Sri Lanka by 2048.

The programme was formed to provide welfare for two million families, out of which 1.4 million families already receiving the benefits.

But considering the current dire economic situation measures have been taken to increase the number of “Aswesuma” welfare benefit recipients to 2.4 million families.

The Cabinet of Ministers has also granted its consent to the proposal furnished by President Ranil Wickremasinghe in his capacity as the Finance, Economic Stability and National Policies Minister to implement the revised Aswesuma Welfare Benefit Programme, Cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardhana said.

Accordingly, it has decided to extend the valid period for the vulnerable social group among the social groups qualified for Aswesuma benefits as from April 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024, and the valid period for the transitional social group (of those income deteriorated temporarily due to economic crisis) among the social groups qualified for Aswesuma benefits as from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024. Measures have also been taken to amalgamate the existing vulnerable social group and transitional social group (of those income deteriorated temporarily due to economic crisis) and considering 800,000 families as vulnerable group with effect from January 1,2024 and payment of an allowance of Rs.5000 with effect from that date until December 31,2024.

Upon the process of confirmation of information, payment of Rs.7,500 for patients suffering from unidentified kidney diseases, Rs.7,500 for disabled persons and Rs 3,000 for elderly persons included in the Aswesuma family list with effect from April 2024.

It has also decided to increase the payment of Rs.7,500 for patients suffering from unidentified kidney diseases, Rs.7,500 for disabled persons and Rs 3,000 for elderly persons included in and pending in lists with effect from January 1,2024 and make this payment by the District Secretaries or Divisional Secretaries away from the Aswesuma programme.
