Attack on SLPP supporters: Probe to arrest suspects
Police investigations have started to arrest the people who attacked a group of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters who were ready to go home after attending a meeting at Temple Trees on May 9.
Some of the SLPP supporters were pushed into the Beira Lake and attacked and protesters had set fire to the buses they came from.
Two persons have been arrested by the Colombo Crime Division on suspicion. There is a woman among them.
On May 09, more than 10 buses were set on fire and some of them were pushed into Beira Lake.The police say an organized group led the attack.
They were attacked and pushed into the Beira lake while the buses that had arrived transported them to the meeting held at Temple Trees were set on fire and destroyed.
Police say that about 30 people were thrown into the Beira lake and were kept in the water for more than an hour. A large number of people who were attacked and unable to go to their villages had stayed at Temple Trees premises overnight and the Police say that doctors came and treated the injured.
Police say that although the bus owners complained about the damage to the buses, most of the people who were assaulted did not complain about it.
But according to the complaints received, the Police say that they are currently engaged in identifying the suspects from the videos and photos and video data shared on social media.
