A hospital attendant has been arrested on suspicion of stealing four gold rings from a woman who was admitted to the Katugastota Base Hospital for treatment due to a heart condition.
The woman, a resident of the Matale Matihakka Ranmuthugama area, had been on her way to Kondadeniya with her maid, when she had suddenly fallen ill and had been taken to the Katugastota Base Hospital, on Wednesday (25) at around 6.30 pm.
A doctor had examined her in the emergency unit of the hospital and decided to transfer her to the Kandy National Hospital. At that time, there had been a nurse and an attendant assisting the doctor.
The maid said that she was unable to remove the gold jewellery the patient was wearing when she was brought to the hospital as her employer had taken ill suddenly.
The Katugastota Hospital staff had also noticed that the patient had been wearing several rings when she was admitted. Katugastota Police have deployed a police dog to assist in the investigation.
The patient’s gold jewellery may have been stolen while she was being prepared for transfer to the Kandy National Hospital, police said.
The police dog had gone up to the attendant and stopped, Katugastota Police said. The police had taken steps to arrest her based on additional information received. The suspect is a resident of Poornawatte, Kandy.
Investigations are being conducted regarding the incident, under the direction of Katugastota OIC Chief Inspector R.D. Rajapaksa.
