Australian MP Cassandra Fernando meets Speaker

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena greets Australian MP Cassandra Fernando.

Member of the Australian Federal Parliament Cassandra Fernando, who is of Sri Lankan origin, met Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena July (24).

The Speaker expressed his appreciation for Fernando’s political career. There was an exchange of views on the Parliamentary systems of the two countries and the promotion of good practices for securing democracy was also discussed at length in the meeting.

Fernando was born in Sri Lanka in 1987 and immigrated to Australia in 1999. She has been elected to Parliament in the federal election 2022, representing the division of Holt in the State of Victoria for the Australian Labour Party (ALP). She is the first political representative of Sri Lankan origin to represent the Australian Parliament.

Fernando worked as a chef for Woolworths, an Australian multinational retail and finance company, for about 15 years before entering politics.

A special tour of the Parliament of Sri Lanka was also organized for Fernando.

Chairman and members of Australian–Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Association, Udaya Gammanpila, Dr. Sudarshani Fernandopulle, Mohomad Muzammil, Hector Appuhamy, Weerasumana Weerasinghe, Dr. Upul Galappaththi and Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, and Parliament Secretary General Kushani Rohanadeera and Assistant Secretary General Hansa Abeyratne were also present.
