Opener Avishka Fernando played a superb knock, scoring 107 in 137 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes as SSC piled up 250 for 3 wickets on a rain-hit opening day of Major Clubs League Cricket final against Police SC played at NCC grounds yesterday.

Police SC skipper Ashen Bandara win the toss and elected to field first.

SSC openers Shevon Daniel (56 in 88 balls with 7 fours) and Avishka Fernando added a solid opening stand of 111 runs. Daniel was dismissed in the last over just before lunch, with Kusal Janith Perera taking an outstanding catch in the outfield to dismiss him off the bowling of leg spinner Malinda Pushpakumara.

Skipper Nipun Dhananjaya was out after scoring 40 in 75 balls with 2 fours while Kusal Mendis contributed 29 runs in 55 balls with 2 fours. Nuwanidu Fernando was unbeaten 7 in 23 balls with a four at the wicket when rain halted the game with 27 overs to spare.

The match started at 45 minutes late at 10.45 am yesterday due to wet ground conditions. The four-day game will continue for a second day but yesterday’s unexpected heavy rain could cause a delayed start today.
