Commonwealth Youth Games silver medalist Ayomal Akalanka from Ambagamuwa Central College came up with a stunning display on the final day of the All-Island School Games at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Friday. He achieved his personal best timing of 51.10 seconds in the men’s 400m Hurdles, setting a new Sri Lanka Youth record.
Competing in the Under-18 age category, Ayomal had already set a new meet record the previous day by winning his heat with a time of 52.22 seconds. On the final day, he shattered his own meet record with a sensational timing of 51.10 seconds, erasing his previous personal best of 51.39 seconds set at the Asian Under 18 Championship in August this year.
Ayomal’s incredible performance was just one highlight of the event. In total, four new meet records were established in the relay events on the final day, bringing the count to 23 new meet records during the five-day competition.
In the overall rankings, Lyceum International School Wattala secured the Overall Girls Championship with 160 points, leaving A Ratnayake Central College Walala in the runners-up position with 149 points. Ambagamuwa Central College claimed the third place with 63 points.
For the Boys Overall Championship, Maris Stella College Negombo took the top spot with 90 points, followed by Lyceum International School Wattala as runners-up with 84 points, and St Benedict’s College Kotahena in third place with 75 points.
Tharushi Karunaratne, the Asian Games 800m gold medalist from A Ratnayake Central College Walala, was named the Best Female Athlete of the Games. She won the Under-20 400m with a new meet record timing of 53.21 seconds, accumulating 1080 points.
Malith Yasiru of Kahawatte Central College set a new meet record in the Under-20 Triple Jump, covering a distance of 15.93 meters. He was adjudged the Best Male Athlete of the Games, earning 1050 points for his remarkable performance.
In the battle for the Overall Championship, Western Province emerged as the victor with 1,224.5 points, with Central Province as the runners-up with 556 points, and Southern Province securing the third place with 339 points.
