Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina wins re-election for fifth term

0 2

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was re-elected for a fifth term in a national election held on Sunday (7) despite a boycott by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who is currently in jail.

According to the Daily Star, Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League won a fourth consecutive term in the 12th Parliamentary election, with the lowest voter turnout since democracy was restored in 1991. The Bangladeshi media reported that the Awami League had won the elections, but the country’s Election Commission has yet to confirm this.

According to the Daily Star, Sheikh Hasina’s landslide victory in yesterday’s polls means she will further tighten her grip on power, as she is set to become Bangladesh’s longest-serving Prime Minister.

Notably, despite a boycott by the opposition BNP and 15 other parties, the Awami League won in five constituencies.

Sheikh Hasina, the leader of the Awami League, has directed that no victory procession be held following the announcement of the results of the 12th General Election.

PM Sheikh Hasina, the President of the Awami League, won the Gopalganj-3 constituency almost unopposed in a landslide victory of 249,962 votes in Sunday’s 12th General Election. This constituency contains 108 seats in total. (PTC)
