
The Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill (PSTA) has been included in Parliament’s Order Paper for tomorrow (06) for its First Reading.
According to the Order Paper, the Bill is scheduled to be presented by the Minister of Justice and National Integration at the commencement of public business.
The proposed legislation seeks to protect Sri Lanka’s national security and its people from acts of terrorism, terrorism-related offences and specified acts constituting terrorism committed within or outside the country.
It also seeks to prevent Sri Lankan territory and its people from being used for the preparation of terrorist activities outside the country.
The Bill contains provisions relating to the detection, identification, apprehension, arrest, detention, investigation, prosecution and punishment of persons accused of committing acts of terrorism or other terrorism-related offences.
Significantly, the proposed legislation also provides for the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act, No. 48 of 1979.
Cabinet approval has been granted for the Bill, according to the Parliamentary Order Paper.
The Parliament of Sri Lanka is scheduled to convene from 06 – 09 October.
