Blue Star Sports Club and Colombo Football Club will vie for major honours to decide the Champions of the inaugural ‘Super League’ Soccer Tournament when they play their ninth and final week matches on the 11th of December at Race Course ground and Sugathadasa Stadium respectively.
After the successful completion of eight rounds of matches with interruptions due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the semi-professional tournament will come to an end this week. The team Blue Star from Kalutara is heading the fray with 19 points obtained from eight matches where they managed to win six losing one and one match ending in a draw. In their final game, they will confront Blue Eagles the bottom-placed team(tenth-placed). A win here will enable them to clinch the championship without any hassle and if by any chance if they draw or lose this game then Colombo FC will have an opportunity of winning the championship provided they win their final game.
As per the past performance, it seems that Blue Star is likely to snatch a comfortable win over their rivals to clinch a major championship in a domestic tournament. Shenal Sandesh the indefatigable striker, subsequently the highest individual goal scorer of the tournament, with nine goals including a hat trick against New Young last week played sans two of their key foreign players, who missed out on the game due to some technical issue, had played a pivotal role in their success story so far. Came as underdogs to this tournament, the Blue Star team proved to their critics that they are no more an underrated team and had transformed them into a force to be reckoned with. Nevertheless, if they win this match it will be a memorable victory which is mainly due to the sheer dedication and teamwork that saw them reach success.
On the other hand, the Colombo FC team is imbibed with several talented players in their ranks who will play Sea-Hawks. It is going to be a herculean task for them to win this game. Even if they win, the result of the Blue Star-Blue Eagle match will have an impact in this game. Colombo FC team has also played in eight games and have similar results like Blue Star winning six and losing one and drawing the same number of games. Mohamed Aakib their striker with sevens goals including a hat trick of goals ultimately placed him third-highest goal scorer of the tournament. Top competition is expected in this game and the Colombo team might expect that the much-needed luck will drive them to win this title.
Meanwhile, in today’s fixtures, three matches will be out for a decision. At the Race Course grounds, the Defenders will take on New Young at 3.30 p.m. while at Sugathadasa Stadium Renown will lock horns with Ratnam at 3.30 p.m. the second match will be between Red Star and Up Country Lions at 7.30 p.m.
The tournament will give away a total 23.75 million rupees in cash which will be given away among the ten participating teams. The Champion will carry away the Championship Trophy along with rupees five million and the runner up carrying away 3.25 million in cash. Even the team which is placed last in the competition points table will be granted a million-rupee reward.
