Boy dies after wrong kidney operation mishap at LRH
A three-year-old boy, resident of Kotahena area who was receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital (LRH) died yesterday (28) due to an infection following a kidney surgery.
It is reported that the doctors had diagnosed that the child with acute kidney disease andthey have recommended to emove the left kidney. But the parents of the child stated that the doctors later told them that the healthy right kidney was also removed during the operation.
This child, who does not have both kidneys, was referred for haemodialysis until a kidney was transplanted, where he died after ingesting a germ. The parents of the deceased child have alleged that their son lost his life due to the negligence of the doctors.
In this regard, the Director of Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, Dr.G.Wijesuriya, says that the child’s kidney was operated due to abnormal location, and during the operation, the healthy kidney was also removed.The director said that one of the kidneys was inoperable due to the fact that the two kidneys of this child were stuck together at birth, and the other kidney was also removed when the kidney was damaged due to a germ.
