Boy dies in father’s attack

A schoolboy who had been under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Karapitiya Hospital after being beaten by his father with a broomstick died yesterday morning, Galle Police said.

The boy was identified as 16-year-old student of Siyambalagahawatta, Mahamodara, Galle. A student of a popular school in Galle, he had sat for the O/L Exam this time. The father had attacked the student on the head with a broom stick, telling him to study for the exam. Thereafter, the student had fainted. Admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital later, he had died yesterday morning while under treatment in the ICU, Police said.

The 49-year-old father has been arrested. He was to be produced before the Galle Magistrate’s Court, Police said.
