The General Secretary of Gymkhana Club and Rugby convener of CH and FC – Major Tanesh Dias Speaking exclusively to the Daily News – giving his personal opinion on local rugby refereeing said “It is a real shame that there is a perception that our referees are below par, a view which was underlined during several rugby games in the ongoing 2022 SLR league rugby tournament. Sadly the games were marred by the referee making bad blunders with some teams losing in the end”.
“At the end of the day there were immediate reactions from everyone that they had been robbed of victory. But the all-important perception was that justice had been denied”.
“Some rugby loving fans even went as far as alleging that the League had already been decided and that the silverware was destined to end up on a mantelpiece of a certain club. It will do no one any good to Sri Lanka rugby”.
“There is no doubt that the refereeing standards have declined immensely in Sri Lanka. Perhaps the referees have panicked and made wrong decisions”.
“The League title will be sweeter if it is earned the hard way, rather than having a cake walk”. “Some highly respected past referees have suggested the best way to overcome this problem would be for foreign referees to blow the big games”.
Perhaps the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Referees (SLSRR) should consider this proposal before the second round commences, if they want to take the respectability over the local rugby season. It would be prudent if a foreign referee is brought down to officiate crucial matches such as the Kandy-Havies, Kandy-CH and FC, CH and FC-Havies which will come up. Justice must not only be done, it must also be seen to be done.
Until the public has faith in our own referees, it is perhaps best that overseas referees are getting down. I’m not suggesting that they will be infallible, for after all we are all human and prone to mistakes, but at least the perception of neutrality will be seen to happen” concluded Dias.
