Brothers Akash and Vishal pride of Sri Rahula, Katugastota

The school cricket arena has a unique combination of brothers taking part in tournaments from the hill capital of Kandy. Akash and Vishal Gardiyawasam are brothers, and both are schoolboy cricketers, currently playing for Sri Rahula College Katugastota in Kandy.

Both are all-rounder’s and even playing together for their school. Akash is the older of the two and Visal is the younger and both of them are happy that they have got an opportunity to represent the same school team in an inter-school cricket tournament of this magnitude.

Akash first played cricket for Sri Rahula College Under-13 Team. Recalling his young playing days he said: “After representing and captaining the Under-13 team, I went on to captain the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 college teams.”

In 2017, I played for the Central Province team and in 2019; I was the captain of the Kandy Maroons District side. Captaining the School Under-13 team in 2016, I scored nearly 650 runs batting as a right hander in the top order and claimed a total of 52 wickets while bowling right arm leg spin.

As the captain of Sri Rahula College in the year 2016, Akash came out with a fine all round performance against Nugawela Central, where he scored a brilliant knock of 116 runs and took a match bag of 12 wickets to cap an outstanding performance.

While playing for his school first XI team in 2019 he claimed 50 wickets.

He also played against the visiting England and Australian school teams and was adjudged man of the match in one of those matches by scoring a superb innings of 92 runs while claiming two wickets against the visiting Brisbane school team from Australia.

Akash was drafted in as the net bowler against the visiting West Indies national team in 2020, where he excelled against the batsman with his spin variety Akash is the present first XI cricket captain of Sri Rahula College, Katugastota, as well as the Senior Prefect of the school. His younger brother Vishal is a right hand opening batsman, the wicket keeper of the school side and also bowls right arm off spin.

In 2018 he scored 503 runs in just nine innings with a stunning average of 55.90 and claimed 24 wickets in seven innings with his right arm off breaks.

Vishal had captained the Sri Rahula under 13 and under 15 teams for two consecutive years and also had the honour of playing three matches against the visiting foreign junior teams in 2019.

He captained the under17 school team and performed creditably by scoring a brilliant unbeaten knock of 114 and claimed 5 wickets against Hataraliyadda Central College.

Vishal made his first XI debut for Sri Rahula College, Katugastota in 2020 and was adjudged the best batsman at the big match in the same year. He is also a junior prefect and tipped to lead the first XI team of Sri Rahula College, Katugastota next year.

Their parents influenced both of them to play cricket and backed them all the way by providing them the required cricketing equipment. “Even now they are supporting us with everything, whenever we require any help to continue playing cricket,” said Akash and Vishal.
