In the last season,Sylvestrians gave their best in all age groups in the game, due to the good coaching of Suranga Kodithuwaku and assistant coach Shemal Weerasekara and the trainer Akalanka Wallage.
St. Sylvester’s College gives a big hand for rugby, and the Old Sylvestrians SC too gives the biggest backing St. Sylvester’s College were the third school in Kandy to play rugby, started in 1954 with the famous Trinitian Bobby Jayaweera as the Coach. This school is better known for their boxing skills have turned out to be a striking force in school rugby in the recent past. Despite the limited facilities, they have made steady progress in the game while battling many hardships. St. Sylvester’s are hampered to a great extent by the unavailability of a proper playground for the game. Players, however, have no option but to practice on the pint-sized grounds at Asgiriya, which hardly have the necessary requirements to play a full contact game.
And to top it all, the grounds have no goal post, and also grass is less and a fall on the ground can be fatal. However, the ruggerites from this school have survived the worst and have built a reputation of having the ability to undo even the toughest of teams
Trinity Under 16 and 20 TT teams excel
Trinity College’s table tennis teams gave their best at the National Schools’ Games held at S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia few days back. It was nice to see after 30 long years the Under 16 team secured the third place, the side was led by Yevan Bandara, and the players who did well were Lasas Somachandra, Menula Bandara, Shafiullah Akram, Vihanga Sangakkara, and Leeshitha Gunathilake.
The Under 20 team led by Dan Bartholomeusz, portrayed a noteworthy form in the preliminary stages of the tournament.
The team had players like Akesh Dimantha, Mithum Munasinghe, and Timothy Navaratnaraja;these players helped the side to take fourth place. A bog hand should go to coach Sampath Kumara and the MIC M. Sufiyan too game his best
