Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa presented Budget 2022 in Parliament yesterday in the presence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. Nearly all Members on both sides were in attendance for the much-awaited Budget, the first in the post-pandemic era.

Minister Rajapaksa said it was a challenge to formulate the Budget 2022 due to the global pandemic situation and the resultant economic travails. Members on both sides applauded many of the proposals that have been formulated despite the economic challenges.

Although the public gallery was closed in view of health concerns, there were a number of officials from various State organisations as well as diplomats in the special galleries. The entire session was held in accordance with the prevailing Covid-19 health guidelines.

The MPs as well as the invitees participated in the traditional Budget Tea Party afterwards. This was an occasion for all to mingle and share their views on the Budget. Some Members also took this opportunity to brief the media. The Members have a long Budget Debate ahead, starting today.

“The budget proposals are being presented at a time when the country is grappling with five global challenges,” the Finance Minister said. The Government Members applauded when the Minister assured that the Government however had the confidence and the strength to face all the challenges facing the country and emerge unscathed.
