Burglars posing as Ministry officials steal cash, jewellery

A group of five persons, posing as a group of officials from the Defence Ministry, came to a house in Mankada, Kotawehera, Hambegamuwa and stole cash and gold worth Rs. 500,000, on Friday (23) at around 10:00 pm.

The home owner, who is a 61-year-old businessman, complained to the Hambegamuwa Police that five persons came to the house under the guise of checking information received by the Defence Ministry that illegal activities were taking place.

The businessman told the police that he had no suspicion about them and they checked the house saying that they came for an investigation.

The police say that under the pretext of checking the house, they stole Rs. 360,000 and gold jewellery from the house and then fled.

The police say that the suspects have not been identified yet and that investigations are underway to identify and arrest them.
