Avissawella Police said that three persons had broken into the Avissawella Cooperative Rural Bank and stolen a safe containing cash and gold jewellery.
According to the police, there had been Rs. 500,000 in the safe and the value of the gold jewellery has not been calculated yet.
At around 2.15 am, the gang who were masked, had come in a van and had opened an umbrella to avoid identification on CCTV. They had broken the locks on the front door and had entered the bank.
They had damaged the CCTV cameras inside and outside the bank, police said. They said the thieves had dragged the safe along the floor and had loaded it into the van and fled.
