A passenger transport bus collided with an elephant and ran off the road, hitting a tree, in the Mahailluppallama area of the Ipalogama Police division, early morning yesterday.
The bus was running from Kekirawa to Anuradhapura when the accident took place at around 5.20 am yesterday.
The accident occurred in front of the Mahailluppallama Seed Research Institute.
A wild elephant inhabiting the Seed Research Institute was crossing the road to return to the forest when it hit the bus, which was severely damaged in the accident.
According to hospital sources, four people – the driver, conductor and two passengers – suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital, and their condition is not serious.
Elephants are constantly moving across the main road in this area. The locals are also demanding that a remedy be provided for this before a bigger accident occurs. The Ipalogama Police are conducting further investigations regarding the accident.
