Businessman cuts road through land near Sinharaja
The Rakwana Police said that a complaint has been received that a businessman was cutting a road using backhoes, claiming that the particular land belonged to him while the Survey Department was carrying out the surveying of the same land which has already
been acquired for conservation adjacent to Sinharaja rain forest through the legal process.
A law was drafted to acquire around 500 acres of the Rosemary land and Kabaragala mountain to the Department of Forest Conservation and added to the Sinharaja Forest.
Therefore, the Godakawela Divisional Secretariat has made a complaint that there have been obstacles in carrying out the surveying of the Rosemary land proposed to be taken over due to the activities of the businessman.
Accordingly, Survey Department officials have been measuring the boundaries of the land since about ten days before the particular land to be taken over. In the meantime, the businessman was cutting a road using a backhoe claiming that he owns part of this land. Rakwana Forest Officer’s and the Godakawela Divisional Secretary’s Office have gone to the particular place and made a complaint to the Police after inspecting it.
