The Kandy Police launched an investigation to arrest a businessman who kidnapped a 16-year-old child based on a dispute he had with the mother, regarding a money transaction. Police said the abducted child was a resident of Gemunu Mawatha, Hanthana, Kandy.
According to a complaint lodged by the child’s mother, the abduction had taken place on the Wednesday afternoon (15).
She had told the police that she had purchased a stock of material worth Rs. 1.2 million a few months ago from a businessman residing at Polgahawela. Since two cheques she had given him in respect of payment had not been honoured, the child had been kidnapped asking for the money.
She had come to the Police on Wednesday night stating that the abducted child had been released in Mawanella. She had also said that the child had been given money and asked to take a bus home.
Investigations have confirmed that the child had not suffered any physical injury or any other injury. Based on the mother’s initial complaint and statements from the child, it is apparent that the child had been taken away by force. “Investigations are being carried out against the businessman from Polgahawela,” a top police official said.
