Buying exotic jewellery? Some materials could be illegal

Wildlife officers have seized several pieces of jewellery allegedly made from ivory and black coral during raids in the Pannegamuwa and Tissamaharama areas.

Acting on information about the alleged sale of jewellery made from elephant tusks, wildlife officers conducted a raid in Pannegamuwa on September 19 and arrested a suspect while he was allegedly preparing to sell an ivory pendant.

The suspect was produced before the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court and released on Rs. 100,000 personal bail.

In a separate raid on the same day, wildlife officers inspected a jewellery shop in Tissamaharama and seized an ivory pendant and bracelet, nine pendants made from black coral, two pendants made using shells and nine shells that had been displayed at the shop.

The suspect linked to the jewellery shop was produced before the Tissamaharama Magistrate’s Court and released on Rs. 500,000 personal bail.

Both cases are scheduled to be taken up again on October 2. (Newswire)
