CAA conducts 144 islandwide inspections on reusable plastic, baby feeding bottles

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) conducted 144 islandwide raids and inspections last week targeting reusable plastic bottles used to carry drinking liquids and feeding bottles made of polymer materials.

Of the inspections, 96 involved reusable plastic bottles covered by SLS 1616, while 48 involved polymer-based feeding bottles covered by SLS 1306.

More than 1,400 items were taken into custody as case productions during the inspections.

The CAA said the requirements for these products are set out in Direction No. 96, published in Extraordinary Gazette No. 2456/42 dated October 1, 2025, which came into effect on April 1, 2026.

Locally manufactured products covered by the direction must bear the SLS Product Certification Mark issued by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). Simply stating that a product complies with the relevant standard is not sufficient, the CAA said.

For imported products, however, the SLS Product Certification Mark itself is not mandatory. Instead, such products must have been inspected and approved for sale under the SLSI Import Inspection Scheme.

The CAA said officers also examined bills, invoices and supply information where necessary to trace the source of products. Investigations may therefore extend through the supply chain from retailers to suppliers or distributors and ultimately to importers or manufacturers, where supported by evidence.

Consumers have been advised to check product information carefully when purchasing reusable plastic bottles, particularly feeding bottles for babies, and to retain their bills or receipts.

The CAA also reminded traders, suppliers and importers to ensure that applicable legal and standards requirements are met before placing such products on the market.
