Cab driver’s killing in Ingiriya: Three suspects arrested

Police arrested three suspects including an ex-military person and an ex-Navy soldier who had been involved in the murder of a taxi driver in order to hijack his Rs.8 million worth car on December 14, yesterday. The incident occurred on December 14, where the suspects had killed the driver by assaulting him inside the car, which they had hijacked after booking it for a hire and had dumped the body in the Nambapana area along the Ingiriya – Ratnapura main road. The victim, 48-year-old Asoka Bandara of Minuwangoda was a taxi driver attached to a cab service operating in the Nugegoda area.

Among the arrested are a pawnbroker, who had accepted two mobile phones from the arrested suspects and two more suspects are yet to be arrested in connection with this murder, police said.

A group of four individuals including the arrested two from Nonagama, Ambalantota had come to Ratnapura area on December 14 by bus with the intention of stealing a car from somewhere in order to sell its parts.

At Ratnapura, they had contacted this cab service located in Nugegoda over the phone requesting a cab to go to the Katunayake Airport. Accordingly, the said driver had arrived in the Ratnapura town around 8.45 p.m. Later, they had left from Ratnapura to enter the expressway from the Gelanigama exchange. While on the way, the suspects had brutally assaulted the victim after tying his hands and pushing papers into his mouth when he stopped the vehicle in Madawala area.

After killing him, the suspects had dumped the body at Nambapana area and had fled by the same vehicle. They had also stolen the two mobile phones of the victim, which they had pawned to the arrested pawnbroker.

The Divisional Crimes Investigation Unit of Panadura and the Alubomulla Police conducting investigations into the murder were able to arrest the suspects and the vehicle was also taken into custody.The suspects were to be produced before the Horana Magistrate. Police are investigating.
