The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a revised three-year plan valued at Rs. 15,077.82 million (Rs. 15.07Bn) to resume and complete the remaining work on the Kolonnawa Stormwater Drainage and Environment Improvement Project.

Originally launched in 2019, the project experienced severe delays due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent economic recession. To address these setbacks, the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development submitted a newly restructured plan and updated cost framework to the Cabinet.

The newly approved strategy focuses on several major infrastructure tasks, including completing the 3,250 meter Salalihini Mawatha canal and constructing the 3,868 meter Dahamwala canal. It also involves creating dedicated water retention ponds and water storage areas to manage heavy rainfall effectively.

Additionally, workers will repair the 4,475 meter Passiyana canal and the 650 meter Dandukotuwa canal, restore the Dandutota flood gate and deploy three mobile pumps, each capable of pumping stormwater at a rate of one cubic meter per second. To ensure fair treatment for residents, an estimated Rs. 1,015 million has been allocated under a specialized relief package to compensate affected families for necessary land acquisitions and potential disruptions to their livelihoods during execution.
