Cabinet nod for 100,000 MT of keeri samba to be imported
Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said in Parliament yesterday (01) that the Cabinet has approved the import of 100,000 metric tons of keeri samba rice for the upcoming festive season.
The Minister also stated that the Government decided to import 50,000 metric tons of rice under the first phase and sell it only under the intervention of the state.
He said this while replying to the question asked by Member of Parliament Rohana Bandara expecting oral answers.
Minister Amaraweera said that keeri samba was cultivated in about seven percent of the paddy-cultivated lands in the last season and a harvest of 5,000 metric tons was obtained.
He said that some paddy mill owners have kept stocks of rice and with the import of rice stocks, they will be able to control the rise in rice prices.
The Minister said that the country needs 475,000 metric tons of samba and keeri samba rice, and 500,000 metric tons are being produced, thus producing an excess amount of rice.
He said that money for fertilizers will be given to farmers compulsorily and that there will be no reduction in the quality of fertilizers.
The Minister said that steps will be taken to provide fertilizer for Rs. 9,000 through agricultural development institutions.
