Cabinet paper to regulate shipment of fuel oil discharged

Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has taken steps to present a Cabinet Memorandum to regulate the fuel oil discharged from ships, the Ministry said in a press release.

“The Minister expects to submit this cabinet paper next week. The objective of this Cabinet Memorandum is to regulate the process of disposing fuel oil and to earn foreign exchange through that process. At present, the amount of fuel oil discharged annually from ships coming to our country exceeds 20,000 metric tons,” the release added.

“The Cabinet Memorandum will be submitted to inform the Cabinet of Ministers in this regard and to prevent the damage caused to the environment and to earn revenue from fuel oil while regulating it properly,” the release said.
