The 23rd edition of Cargills Village to Home was held on December 2-3 at Cargills FoodCity Kandana. Participating SMEs earned an income of approximately Rs. 1 million, marking the highest total income achieved by SMEs during a two-day event, highlighting the positive spillover effects of the Cargills Group ecosystem which attracts thousands of customers daily to its stores across the country.
The event showcased a diverse array of products, creating a vibrant shopping experience for customers. From traditional handicrafts to homemade food products, the event provided an opportunity for customers to explore and support local entrepreneurs while enjoying high-quality goods.
Initiated in 2020 during the pandemic, the Village to Home programme aimed to address the challenges faced by SMEs who had lost access to markets, with a broader vision to foster the development of small entrepreneurs.
Cargills has continued the programme in the aftermath of the pandemic, given the programme’s growing popularity among SMEs and customers. Thus far, the company has created opportunities for over 900 SMEs to showcase their products.
Some entrepreneurs have successfully expanded their markets beyond Sri Lanka, as a result of the visibility gained through the Cargills Village to Home programme. With the expertise of the Village to Home technical team, these entrepreneurs have been able to strengthen their businesses. As an extension of the program, selected SMEs are also granted dedicated gondolas inside Cargills Retail stores to showcase their products. This opportunity allows the SMEs to reach an even wider customer base, helping them earn a consistent income throughout the year.
Furthermore, the Cargills Bank plays a pivotal role by providing financial support to these entrepreneurs. Cargills provides the monthly trade stalls free of charge to the SMEs, bearing all expenses associated with the programme.
