Case against felling of Pandu Karanda tree closed

Gampaha District Acting Forest Officer M. M. Varuna Priya yesterday presenting the facts before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Courts said that no legal action will be taken in relation to a complaint filed by a B report regarding the illegal felling and dumping of an endangered Pandu Karanda tree in the Daraluwa area where construction work is being carried out on the Central Expressway.

After presenting the information before courts,Gampaha No.02 Magistrate Fathima Sahana Mahji ordered that the case be closed. The complaint was filed against the construction section of the Central Expressway by the Gampaha District Forest Office indicating that the Pandu Karanda tree was cut down and buried late at night.

In relation to the complaint, the Pandu Karanda tree which had been buried was dug up last June 28 and taken to the Gampaha Botanical Gardens and replanted under the supervision of the Acting Magistrate Indrani Attanayake as per the order of the Magistrate.
