Cash, jewellery worth over Rs. 4.0 mn stolen

Thieves broke into a house in Galapitamada, Kiwuldeniya, belonging to a retired clerk who had worked at a well-known garment factory. They had broken open a safe and stolen more than Rs. 4.8 million worth of gold and cash.

The Galapitamada Police stated that the theft was committed by breaking the roof tiles of the house and entering it and then breaking the locks of the safe in a room.

Gold jewellery worth Rs. 4,725,000, four watches worth Rs. 100,000, cash of Rs.60,000 and the television set were stolen.

The 74-year-old owner of this house, a retired clerk, told the police that he had visited his son’s house at 9.00 am on March 3 and returned home at 8.30 am the next day.

He told the police that the theft had taken place during that time.
