The removed IGP, re-instated within an hour:
Strong suspicion whether sudden removal to protect a drug dealer:

The decision taken by the Constitutional Council to remove Inspector General of Police C.D.Wickramaratne from his post at a time President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister of Public Security (in charge of Police) Tiran Alles are out of the country was reversed by the President within an hour and Wickramaratne was reinstated as the IGP yesterday.

The President who is on an official visit to Beijing, China had immediately given all orders from there to take necessary measures to re-appoint Wickramaratne as the Inspector General.

A senior government minister told the Daily News that it was a serious mistake

on the part of the Constitutional Council to remove the Inspector General when the President who is also the Defence Minister and the Minister in charge of Police Tiran Alles are not in the country.

The above minister added that there is a strong suspicion whether the removal of the Inspector General is the result of a conspiracy as the President who is away from the country, is expected to return in two days.

The senior minister also said that a probe will be launched to find out if this step was taken to protect any drug trafficker before the President’s arrival to the country.

He further said that the removal of the Inspector General at a time when the President and the Public Security Minister who is in charge of Police are not in the country is equivalent to shutting down the entire Police force in this country.

Steps had been taken earlier to extend IGP C.D.Wickramaratne’s tenure which had expired by another three weeks.
