A total of 793 traffic offenders have been identified within the first 15 days (February 1 to 15) through the surveillance camera system implemented to monitor traffic violations in Colombo.

Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa said, 300 police stations across the country have been notified to take necessary action against the said offenders and send charge sheets to their home addresses.

“This procedure of nabbing traffic offenders through security cameras is something that we have expected to implement for a long time. This is not an easy task. Vehicle registrations have also increased since we started this program. Even the sales of vehicles on open documents have been affected due to this. We need to expand this activity,” Priyantha Weerasuriya, Senior DIG in charge of Crime and Traffic Division said.

So far, 108 security cameras have been installed in 33 locations in Colombo. Apart from this vans equipped with cameras have been mobilized across other cities in the island to nab traffic offenders.
