CDS GRACES THE PREFECT INVESTITURE AT ROYAL COLLEGE POLONNARUWA

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, graced the Prefect Investiture ceremony at Royal College Polonnaruwa this morning as the Chief Guest (6 June 2024).

General Shavendra Silva attended the occasion at the invitation of the Principal of Royal College, Mr. Ravilal Wijayawansha, and upon arrival, he was graciously received by the Principal, the staff and the students before being ushered to the auditorium. During the event, over 150 students were awarded the prestigious Prefect Badges, and some others were honoured for excelling in academic and extracurricular activities.

After presenting the prefect badges and awards, General Shavendra Silva delivered an inspiring speech, motivating all students to pursue their dreams with purpose. He began by expressing his sincere gratitude for being invited as the Chief Guest and congratulated the newly inducted Prefects on their remarkable achievements.

In his speech, General Shavendra Silva pointed out that participating in extracurricular activities during his school days, which were filled with hard work and diverse pursuits, helped him develop the leadership skills crucial to his journey to becoming a General in the Army and where he stands today. He urged the students to cultivate determination in their minds to achieve success in their own lives.

When talking about the role of a prefect, he emphasized that the students who walked onto the stage to receive their prefect badges should walk out as transformed persons. From tomorrow onward, they should be mindful of their behaviour and discipline, striving to set an example by demonstrating leadership and serving as role models for their fellow students.

While speaking to the students on stage when adorning badges, the CDS learned from them that many aspire to become doctors or engineers. However, he emphasized that there are numerous avenues open for them to excel in various fields, achieve great heights, earn lucrative benefits, and lead fulfilling lives. Nevertheless, the CDS emphasized that, above all, our foremost hope for the students is to grow into responsible citizens of our country, embodying values of integrity, compassion, and civic duty while contributing positively to society and actively engaging in the advancement of our nation.

At the same time, the CDS expressed profound admiration for both past and present teachers, acknowledging their invaluable contributions to the nation by nurturing and shaping prominent individuals, including a former president of the country. Finally, as his speech drew to a close, General Shavendra Silva extended his heartfelt wishes for success to the students, principal, and staff, encouraging them to pursue their future endeavours with determination and confidence.

General Shavendra Silva expressed his appreciation for six outstanding students who excelled in the recent Advanced Level Examinations. In recognition of their exceptional academic achievements, he presented each of them with special gifts. At the same time, the CDS took a moment to cordially interact with the students and the staff present at the occasion.

The event was meticulously organised with traditional dance performances and melodious singing presented by the students adding a touch of elegance and charm to the occasion.

Founded in 1965 upon the vision of the late politician Hon. C P de Silva, Royal College Polonnaruwa stands as one of Sri Lanka’s premier national schools. With a rich history of academic excellence and extracurricular achievements, the school currently educates over 6,000 students. It is renowned for its commitment to fostering a holistic educational environment, nurturing the intellectual, artistic, and athletic talents of its diverse student body.
