CEA cracks down on illegal lunch sheets manufacturers

The flying squad unit of the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) on Thursday took stern action against a leading polythene product manufacturer at Welewatta in Wellampitiya for producing and distributing illegally manufactured, substandard lunch sheets.

According to CEA rules and regulations, polythene paper manufacturers are liable to manufacture only less than 20 micron lunch sheets, polythene bags and other items such as sashes packets, toys fill with air, garlands, cotton buds, plastic straws, plastic plates, cups, spoons, forks etc.

During the raid at Welewatta, Wellampitiya a large quantity of 7,672 kilograms of illegally manufactured lunch sheets were taken into custody by CEA flying squad unit. The CEA also took into custody a large quantity of lunch sheet rolls that have been brought to manufacture lunch sheets and also substandard polythene bags.

Speaking to Daily News CEA, Chairman Venura Fernando said the CEA has already instructed countrywide all flying squad officials to crack down manufacturers who produce and sell substandard polythene papers and other products as they are non-degradable and unhealthy not only to humans but also to animals as well as to amphibious and ocean life.

The CEA Chairman further said a similar programme was also launched by CEA with the assistance of the Consumers Affairs Authority (CAA) at two large scale polythene manufacturing industries in Kesbewa, Kahapola in Kesbewa and Bellanwila in Dehiwala areas to crack down manufacturers who produce and sell substandard polythene papers.
