CEA distributes 28,000 Nelli saplings

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) recently launched a nelli sapling planting programme in all 25 districts with the intention of creating a dust free healthy environment and to provide a valuable medicinal fruits to children and people. CEA expects to distribute 28,000 nelli saplings countrywide.

According to the programme the CEA distributed 1,000 each nelli saplings to countrywide Government, semi- Government, non-Governmental and private sector institutions and requested officials to plant these saplings in their respective areas considering this plant also help to stop soil erosion.

The main tree planting programme was held at Colombo Royal College premises on the invitation of Royal College, Principal Thilak Watthuhewa in order to educate children about the importance of planting trees, especially valuable plants such as nelli trees in their home gardens.

Accordingly ten well grown nelli saplings were planted in the school premises with the participation of Ven. Kotapola Amarakitthi Thera, Egyptian Ambassador in Sri Lanka Meselesh, Sri Lanka’s UAE Ambassador official Rashed Al Mazaroouei, CEA Chairman Supun Pathirage and TeeJay Lanka, CEO Pubudu de Silva.

Addressing schoolchildren, CEA Chairman said he selected Royal College for the inaugural tree planting ceremony was to encourage and educate schoolchildren on the importance of planting valuable trees in their home gardens.

He said planting more and more trees is the best policy rather than destroying them because trees not only give us the shade and timber but also some trees like nelli provide us with healthy fruits and also these trees protect our environment and water resource.

According to the programme the CEA decided to plant 3,000 nelli saplings on the banks along Kelani river considering that these trees will help soil erosion.
