CEA to conduct pre-assessments of construction projects

0 3

The Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has started a National Strategic Environmental Assessment to identify suitable places to construct industries, housing schemes, buildings, bridges and other similar constructions.

The objective of this assessment which is conducted under the purview of the Presidential Secretariat and the Environment Ministry is to stop damage to projects a few years after construction. It has been revealed that many important construction projects in the country have been undertaken without conducting pre-assessments and as a result these constructions are facing damage after several years. The CEA has also decided to provide necessary advice to persons to identify suitable places before the construction is carried out.

Speaking to the Daily News, CEA Chairman Supun Pathirage said the objective of such an assessment which is carried out for the first time is to supervise suitable places that would not cause any environmental hazards before construction.

The details of the new assessment project was discussed at a technical committee meeting held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute under the purview of the Central Environmental Authority. Accordingly, the CEA appointed a 20-member technical panel represented by CEA Chirman Pathirage, Director General Hemantha Jayasinghe, Prof. Devaka Weerakoon and CEA former Director General Ramani Ellapola to carry out this proposed Strategic Environmental Assessment.
