The Colombo Hockey and Football Club moved to the third place in the Nippon Paint Inter-Club Rugby League Tournament with a hard-fought 18 points (three tries, one penalty) to 12 (one goal, one try) win over Sri Lanka Police at the Race Course Colombo yesterday after leading 18-7 at the breather.

The lads from Maitland Crescent opened scoring with an unconverted try by centre Mohamed Abszal to make it 5-nil. They increased the lead when full-back Irusha Nethmina put over a thirty-metre penalty. The Policemen hit back with a fine try by centre Hirantha Perera with fly-half Yohan Peiris adding the extra points. But CH and FC went ahead further through tries by flankers: Gimhana Silva and Gehan Madushanka, both of which were not converted and the score read 18-7 at lemons. After resumption, the Policemen reduced the deficit through a try by full-back Mithun Hapugoda with Kanishka missing the conversion.

CH tried hard to penetrate the Police defence but were foiled by some fierce tackling by the visitors which prevented CH from earning a bonus point but still, they managed to move up to third place with 21 points displacing Havelocks who went down to fourth position in the points table with 19 points.

CH were also hampered as they played with 13 players in the second half due to 2 players being given yellow cards. This was CH and FC’s fourth victory for the season having earlier beaten Navy, Havelocks and Air Foce.
