Former S. Thomas’ College, CH and FC and Havelock Sports Club ruggerite cum EFL’ Global Logistics Conglomerate Director Sammy Akbar, was appointed as CH and FC Rugby Consultant with immediate effect.
The 43 year old Akbar popularly known as “Sammy” himself a past rugby player played his school rugby for S. Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia as a second row forward in 1995 (under the captaincy of Hans Billimoria) and later shifted to number eight in 1996 (under Anuruddha Peiris) and also played for the Sri Lanka junior national rugby team in 1995 under Harris Omar as well with distinction.
In 1997 he joined CH and FC and played under Bimal Perera, later he crossed over to Havelock Sports Club where he played for them from 1998 until 2001. He was also the ex rugby Chairman at Havelock Sports Club, where he excelled with determination and sheer commitment. Speaking exclusively to Daily News, Sammy Akbar said “I’m very excited to be back at my first club CH and FC.
We have some very experienced players of the calibre of Rohitha “Chichi” Rajapaksa, Sudarshana Muthuthanthri (the only Sri Lankan to represent New Zealand ‘A’ Division club Auckland Blues), Omalka Gunaratne, Hirantha Perera, Prasath Madushanka, Sudam Sooriarachchi, Kevin Dixon, Reeza Rafaideen, Janidu Dilshan, brothers Avishka and Avantha Lee along with some young talent of Thenuka Nanayakkara, Samuel Ogbebor, Hirusha Sampath etc”.
“Hence our aim is to try our very best to become the league champions next year, which has eluded us since the year 2000. We will definitely be a force to be reckoned with among the local clubs in the Sri Lanka rugby arena”.
