Chalitha Pushpika tees off at the Saujana Amateur Open Golf Championship in Malaysia.
In a notable achievement for Sri Lankan golf, 28-year-old Chalitha Pushpika has delivered stellar performances in two recent competitions in Malaysia, securing the 11th position in both tournaments that concluded in December.
Pushpika, an old boy of President’s College Kotte and a former player of the Royal Colombo Golf Club, a home for many Sri Lankan golf enthusiasts, showcased his talent on the international stage.
Competing in the Malaysian Amateur Open, where 72 players from around the world participated, Pushpika claimed the 11th spot, surpassing top-class golfers. Additionally, he secured the 11th position out of 110 golfers in the Saujana Amateur Open, a more competitive event that featured players from the United Kingdom, Portugal, and 15 other countries, including various Asian nations like Korea and Thailand.
Having grown through the ranks at the Royal Colombo Golf Club, Pushpika expressed gratitude to the club, highlighting its role in shaping him into a skilled player. With support from Sri Lanka Golf’s past and present officials, he transitioned into a professional golfer.
Recognizing Pushpika’s success, the Sri Lanka Navy recruited him in February 2020, focusing solely on his golfing talents. Since then, Pushpika has proudly represented the Sri Lanka Navy on the international golfing stage.
Amrith de Soysa, the Vice Captain of the Royal Colombo Golf Club, played a crucial role in Pushpika’s recent tour success by sponsoring him as the sole sponsor for the Malaysian tournaments. Soysa’s support contributed to Pushpika’s remarkable performance, further enhancing Sri Lanka’s standing in the global golfing arena.
