Chess champions rewarded by CFSL

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL) headed by President Luxman Wijesuriya has conducted many tournaments despite the Covid 19 pandemic. They also managed to send Sri Lankan players for the International tournaments and some of those tournaments were conducted on an online basis .

Meanwhile CFSL rewarded the Chess Champions who won Medals at the World Youth Chess Championships and the Western Asian Youth Chess Champions recently . The promising player Oshini Gunawardena created history by winning World Youth Online Chess Championship recently.

Gunawardena from Ferguson High School, Ratnapura was rewarded with a 150,000 Rupees cash award for her achievement in world youth event as well as Western Asian youth online chess championship in which also she bagged the gold medal in the under 10 category.

Meanwhile former National champion and Chess International Master Harshana Thillekaratne who won the gold medal at the recently concluded Asian online Youth chess championship under 18 open category received 50,000 Rupees cash award while 15 year old chess player of Nalanda College Susal de Silva was given a 30,000 Rupees cash award for his achievement of bagging a silver medal in Asain Online Chess youth Championship under 18 category.

Esandi Newansa who won the Western Asian Online Youth Chess C’ship Under 12 Gilrs Bronze medal was given a 20,000 Rupees cash award . In addition two coaches Akila Kavinda ( Oshini and Susal coach ) and Gihan Kanchana De Silva (Coach of Esandi Newansa were given 70,000 and 10,000 Rupess cash awards .

Luxman Wijesuriya the President of the CFSL said these cash awards mainly awarded to encourage chess players and hope more medals will be won by them.

Our vision is to popularise this sport as well as giving more opportunities for the chess players to compete in both domestic and International level tournaments.
