Child dies after falling into carnival’s ‘Well of Death’

A two year-old child died after falling down the stairs of the ‘Maraka Linda’ (Well of Death) at a carnival held at the Madulla public grounds.

The child was injured on Tuesday night and had succumbed to injuries at the Badulla hospital yesterday. Police said that the father of this baby, a resident of Kahatagasdigiliya, is the driver of the lorry belonging to the owner of the circus. Investigations revealed that the child had climbed the stairs of the ‘Maraka Linda’ (Well of Death) while the child’s father was checking on security and decorations before the carnival started. He had slipped and fallen down the stars and had been admitted to the Moneragala hospital from where he was transferred to the Badulla hospital due to the seriousness of the injuries.
