Children dropping out of school at alarming rate – Community Specialist

0 1

Community Medical Specialist in charge of school affairs at the Family Health Bureau, Dr. Ayesha Lokubalasuriya said that the tendency of 12 to 13 year old children to drop out of school is increasing.

She said that a survey report revealed that the attendance of male children in schools in some areas of Colombo is at a very low level and the main reason for this is that due to the current economic problems, children are engaged in menial jobs with the consent of their parents.

Lokubalasuriya said these things yesterday (1) while participating in the press conference held at the Health Promotion Bureau.

She said that an investigation carried out revealed that a significant number of children from areas outside Colombo have stopped going to school because they cannot find the bus fare to come to school.

She further said that the focus is also on establishing a fund in consultation with the Education Ministry to bring the children to school by providing financial support.

She stated that if it is not possible to bring the children who have dropped out of school back to continue their studies, steps should be taken to provide them with other vocational training or else the country’s future generation will be destroyed.

Lokubalasuriya also said that if the children are not given proper education, parents will have to be left alone at home in the future.
