China's Continued Support to Sri Lanka
Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena expressed his gratitude for China’s unwavering support to Sri
Lanka during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador, Mr. Qi Zhenhong, held at Temple House in
Colombo yesterday. The discussions revolved around various areas of collaboration, including direct
investments, agriculture, renewable energy, information technology, education, and water supply,
aimed at addressing the country’s long-term economic challenges.
In the meeting, Prime Minister Gunawardena highlighted the need for Chinese investments in Sri
Lanka, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy, information technology,
education, and water supply. He emphasized that such investments would provide sustainable
solutions to the nation’s economic problems. The discussion also encompassed topics like new
investment projects, expanding trade relations with China, the Colombo Port City, the Hambantota
Port, poverty alleviation programs, education, agriculture, cultural exchanges, high-level relations,
and assistance to the underprivileged.
A notable request made by the Prime Minister to the Chinese Ambassador was to introduce high-
yield rice varieties from China’s Yunnan Province and extend support to enhance rice production
among rural communities in Sri Lanka.
Expressing satisfaction with Sri Lanka’s efforts to overcome challenges, Ambassador Qi Zhenhong
reassured the Prime Minister of China’s continued support. He acknowledged Sri Lanka’s ongoing
initiatives to restructure its debt and tackle economic hurdles, stating that China stands ready to
assist. Additionally, Ambassador Qi mentioned plans to visit schools in remote areas like Badulla and
Buttala to address educational needs.
Prime Minister Gunawardena’s meeting with Ambassador Qi Zhenhong signifies the importance of
the longstanding bilateral relationship between China and Sri Lanka. As China extends its support
across various sectors, both countries aim to strengthen their ties and foster mutual growth and
development.
