Chinese businessman robbed of cash, valuables worth over Rs 40 Mn
Borella Police and the Colombo Crimes Division are investigating an armed robbery of a residence situated on Borella Lake Drive Road, occupied by a Chinese Businessman (CB), of cash and valuables worth over Rs 40 million. Police investigations reveal that the 38-year-old CB, who had arrived in Colombo a year ago, had rented this house in Borella, and was engaged in the Colombo Port City (CPC).
On the night of Aug 19, the CB returned home from the CPC around midnight, in a van driven by its owner, who was also his interpreter.
When the CB and his interpreter entered his house, three masked men, already inside the house, armed with guns and swords, pounced on them and tied them up.
The robbers had then seized the CB’s mobile phone and ordered him to unlock it. While unlocking it, he had managed to alert a friend that he was in trouble. A little while after sending the message, the doorbell of the house rang, when the robbers panicked and fled. The robbers made their getaway in his interpreter’s van. His friends then entered the house and freed them.
On checking out his residence, the CB discovered his housekeeper cum cook gagged and tied up in the kitchen. He found his residence ransacked and vandalised, while cash in foreign and local currency, and valuables in excess of Rs 40 million stolen, including 11 mobile phones, 7 laptops, 5 bottles of foreign liquor, an Armani watch and an expensive belt.
This house has a security camera system, but the DVR that stores the security camera footage had also been stolen by the robbers.
A senior Police officer overseeing the investigation said that the modus operandi of this robbery was unusual and therefore, Police are paying special attention with checks on footage of Police security cameras located in nearby houses, business establishments and roadways, to ensure a thorough investigation.
