The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Gampaha Police has launched an extensive investigation to arrest a group of suspects who pretended to be Police officers and robbed a tea factory owner of Rs. 2.1 million and the ring he was wearing.
The Gampaha Police said that a businessman who is a retired Navy officer and his wife involved in this incident have been taken into custody by the Police and remanded after being produced in Court.
The Police said they were arrested since information had been revealed that this robbery had been planned by this couple.
They also said that the two suspects who pretended to be Police officers are in hiding at present.This incident had taken place at about 9 p.m. on November 14, near a hotel located on the Gampaha, Ja-Ela Road.
The tea factory owner is a resident of Tammita Road, Negombo.
His factory is said to be in Ratnapura. On the 14, he had gone to his tea factory in Ratnapura and was returning to Colombo in a vehicle, carrying Rs. 2.1 million he had got from a transaction. They had gone to Gampaha and the driver of the vehicle who had felt sleepy had halted it near the said hotel and had a nap, as he had mentioned that he was unable to continue driving.
