CID probes Rs. 15.8 Mn fraud at Gannoruwa Vet Research Institute

The Criminal Investigation Department has started a special investigation regarding the complaint made

by the Accountant of the Department of Animal Production and Health regarding the financial fraud of Rs.15.8 million which is said to have taken place in the Gannoruwa Veterinary Research Institute, which is controlled under the Animal Production and Health Department.

Two officers of the Criminal Investigation Department stayed in Kandy for a week and obtained statements from several officers and employees of the Veterinary Research Institute and a group of people who received services from that institute.

After it was revealed that the cashier has been committing this financial fraud for about five years after issuing receipts stating the prices charged in relation to the services they received to the people who come to the institution to get services and altering the amount in the copies of the receipts kept in the institution, the Accountant of the Animal Production and Health Department submitted a complaint to the Criminal Investigation Department in this regard on July 27.

The Veterinary Research Institute Director has also been informed to come to the Criminal Investigation Department and give a statement with the receipts issued by the cashier related to the acceptance of money and the books containing the same information.

The Animal Production and Health Department has also initiated an internal investigation into the related fraud. In addition to this, an audit has also been conducted by the internal audit departments of the Government and that department.
