CID to produce Devala custodian who blackmailed women in Colombo court
Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday (3) ordered the Superintendent of Prisons to produce before Court on May 8,
a devala custodian from Matara who posted advertisements on the internet that he would check the horoscopes of unmarried young women for free, and then obtained photos and information of attractive young women, advertised them as prostitutes and extorted money from women in order remove those advertisements.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) told the court that the suspect had obtained hundreds of thousands of rupees from the women to remove the advertisements which had been published on the internet, mentioning their mobile phone numbers and naming them as prostitutes.
The suspect, who had posted an advertisement on his Facebook page stating that he would check horoscopes for free, had obtained mobile phone numbers of the young women who connected to the account, stating that he needed to know their past in order to predict the present. Later, he had posted a list of the young women’s names and phone numbers, stating they were prostitutes and they had been asked for money to remove those advertisements. It is said that the Criminal Investigation Department has received nearly 20 complaints that the suspect has cheated young women and obtained hundreds of thousands of rupees.
The CID told the court that a warrant had been issued against this suspect in a money fraud case in 2014. The suspect had been arrested in Hambantota April 5 and produced in court and detained at the Matara prison.
A request was made from the court to enable the CID to produce this suspect at Chief Magistrate’s Court in Colombo on May 8. The Magistrate ordered the Matara Prisons Superintendent to produce the suspect named Shashi Dhawan, a resident of Hambantota, before court.
