0 2

Railways General Manager W. A. Gunasinghe yesterday said that due to an altercation between two railway employees, the train services were disrupted yesterday (04) afternoon and despite the fact that legal measures were taken to resolve the issue, the employees resorting to a strike can be described as an act of sabotage.

He said that necessary measures were taken and investigations are being carried out regarding the incident that happened yesterday morning (4) at the Maligawatta railway yard.

Despite these efforts the Railway guards had launched a sudden strike inconveniencing thousands of passengers, he said.

It is reported that the altercation happened between an Under Guard and a Security Guard over smoking of a cigarette. Here, the Under Guards had started a sick leave campaign demanding the suspension of the service of the relevant security officer.

Due to this, measures were taken to call the Police and security forces for the safety of the trains.

Due to this, about 78 train journeys have been cancelled and long distance services have also been affected, the General Manager said.

The General Manager said this kind of behaviour cannot be approved at a time when the railway service has been declared as an Essential Service. He said that if such behaviour continues, strict action will have to be taken in accordance with regulations and the law.

It is also reported that both railway workers involved in the altercation have admitted themselves to hospitals.
