Boralasgamuwa Police said that a civil engineer who is the owner of a mini hydropower plant in Balangoda has gone missing.
Dulwala Devage Wijesinghe (66) who resided at Abhayaratne Mawatha, Boralasgamuwa, has gone missing.
The cab he was driving was parked near the Narthupana Bridge on the Horana – Matugama road and a police patrol found it at around 1.30 am.
Both the front doors of the cab were open and when police officers turned on the flashlight and observed the inside of the cab, they found a laptop, a travelling bag containing clothes, a pair of slippers, a cap and a wallet on the seat next to the driver’s seat.
After the police officers made a call to a phone number found in the wallet, the wife of the engineer responded to it. She said that when she called her husband at around 8.30 pm, he had stated that he was in the Kesbewa area.
Then the civil engineer’s wife and the family came to the Narthupana Bridge early yesterday (29) and identified the cab. A police officer said that the missing civil engineer had left his Abeyratne Mawatha residence in Boralasgamuwa on December 25 to monitor the work of his small-scale hydropower plant in Balangoda. Horana Police took police dog Bruno to the cab to aid their search.
The police dog scented the cap and pair of slippers used by the engineer, went about 20 metres and returned, police said.
Did some group kidnap the civil engineer? Did they bring his cab close to the Narthupana Bridge to make it appear to be a suicide? A senior police officer said that investigations are being conducted from several angles.
