Hundreds of passengers had a narrow escape at Mumbai Airport after an IndiGo flight landed just as an Air India flight was taking off from the same runway. An Air Traffic Control official has been de-rostered following in the incident.
A potential disaster was narrowly avoided at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Saturday as an Air India flight took off right as an IndiGo aircraft was landing on the same runway. According to details, an IndiGo flight arriving from Indore was mistakenly cleared to land on the same runway from which an Air India aircraft was taking off for Thiruvananthapuram.
The close call happened as the Air India flight was still accelerating down the runway for takeoff when the IndiGo flight began its descent. Fortunately, the Air India flight managed to lift off before the IndiGo aircraft touched down, averting a collision. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the incident. The ATC staff member who cleared the IndiGo flight to land on the occupied runway has been removed from duty, or de-rostered, pending the investigation’s outcome.
